WEST SURREY D.A. NEWSLETTER NO. 40

First of all a big thank you to Harold Coleman and Judy for all their hard work in organising the Home Counties Rally.
Thanks also to all the other helpers and runs leaders who had to put up with such appalling weather.  These rallies seem destined to have poor weather so perhaps our DA will be the last to host this event, it will certainly be a brave DA which volunteers to play host next year.

A reminder of some of the ideas offered in past newsletters; a Club hiring of Farnham Pool, a film evening showing some continental races or a film on wheel building.  We have had the offer of two very good slide shows recently but you'll only get what you ask for.  If you are interested in seeing any of the above happen or have better ideas please contact me or any committee member.

TECHNICAL TIPS.  An alternative to using Kodak film tubs for carrying grease is to store some underneath cotterless crank axle caps (S. Doughty).  Remember it's usually easier to replace a displaced chain by feeding it onto the bottom of a chainring, not the top.

BED & BREAKFAST.  This time probably the ultimate B&B.  Mrs M. McKellar, The Bungalow, Braemar, Tel. 03383-675.  This an ideal stop for those touring the Dee Valley and makes a good starting point for crossing the Lhairig Ghru pass to Aviemore.

BENSTEAD CUP REPORT.  The current Benstead Cup placings are:-
1. Chris Juden 237
2. Chris Seymour 196
3. Russ Mantle 178
LADIES:
1. Helen Gill 82
2. Helen Juden 50
JUNIORS:
1. Phil Stone 70
2. Guy Clark 50

The DA's thanks go to F.W. Evans who covered all printing costs associated with the May Day Ride.  The ride was a great success and enjoyed by 123 cyclists.

Simon Doughty would like a few volunteer helpers for the Tour of the Hills on August 5th.  So if you are'nt riding please volunteer to marshall a corner for a couple of hours.  For those riding entry is £1 and the start is Guildford Tech. at 10.00hrs.

Another Simon Doughty special takes place on Monday August 27th.  An off the road ride (i.e. tracks) with two routes, 15 miles and 30 miles.  Start Tanners Hatch YHA.  Entry fee £1.  This sort of event definitely sorts out the bike handlers from the rest so why not improve your skills.  Contact Simon on Byfleet 41458.
