NO. 41

Hazel and I joined Bruce in Somerset where we enjoyed exploring the Quantocks, a fixed centre holiday organised by Tom Race and the CTC.  Beautiful country but fit low gears before you go.  The Combe House Hotel at Holford can be thoroughly recommended both for its situation and food plus the welcome it gives to cyclists.

TECHNICAL TIPS.  If you've seen the article on lamps in the latest Cycletouring remember you read it here first.  Tip this time is to use a rear gear cable on your front changer coiling the extra length up behind the seat tube.  Should you suffer a rear cable failure on tour, disconnect the front changer and use its cable to give you at least 5 speeds until you reach the next cycle shop.

26th Sept. Chris Juden will show a film on wheel-building followed by some Bill Inder cine films of boats and trains.
24th Oct. I will be showing some collected video films of various cycle racing. Tour de France, Olympics etc.
2lst Nov. An illustrated talk by Simon Watkins (CTC Rights Officer) on road network planning for cyclists.
19th Dec. Christmas Social. This will be a special fun and games evening!

Our special thanks go to Simon Doughty and all his helpers who made the DAs Tour of the Hills a success.  For the record:-

170 registered entries
141 starters
112 finishers
 46 Gold standard riders
Entries came from as far afield ad Cornwall, Macclesfield and even Canada.  If the DA wishes to keep this classic event in its calendar more help will be required next year, eight non DA members had to be drafted in this year.  So if you rode the event this year why not change roles next year and help in the running instead.

Bill Inder would like to offer his profound thanks to all who contributed to his birthday present on the 17th June.  The cake organised by Gill Smith was enjoyed by all and Bill has used his cheque plus an unexpected insurance policy bonus to buy a new Claud Butler machine which he reports is running beautifully except the saddle!
