CYCLISTS' TOURING CLUB. WEST SURREY DISTRICT ASSOCIATION.
Ladies and Gentlemen; As in the past few years, the success of the D.A. has again been based on the Sunday club runs although it must be pointed out that average attendances on these runs has dropped to around fifteen. Thursday evening runs have been reasonably well supported with an average of eight and this group held two buffet suppers at Bisley which were both well attended. Whilst there was no summer tour this year, week-ends away were carried out at Easter and August Bank Holiday. The former took eleven members to Dorset while on the latter, seven toured in Sussex. Goodings Youth Hostel was also visited in June.
The Invitation Run was again held this year although only one new rider resulted. The Wayfarers Section enjoyed two joint runs with the Kentish Wheelers Older Members but whereas riders from the Kentish Wheelers tend to grow fewer, these runs are always well supported by our own older members. Although support could be better, competition for the Benstead Cup was intense and in doubt right up to the final event.
The winner proved to be John Moore with Russ Mantle second, Gareth Keller third and A. Robinson fourth. Those four were the only ones to compete in every one of the events (5) as well as in the 50 and 100 mile reliability rides. Winners of the individual events were:-
|ROUGH-STUFF: Russ Mantle.||TREASURE HUNT: Alan Lonslow.|
|SPEED JUDGING: Gareth Keller.||HILL CLIMB: Russ Mantle.|
|FREE-WHEELING: John Moore.|
The Reliability Rides were not well supported; Five succeeded in the 50 mile and five in the 100.
A new departure was a week-end at East Ilsley in May, enjoyed by seven Wayfarers and Thursday-nighters.
The annual dinner at Guildford again proved to be an enjoyable occasion although, due mainly to a snowfall, the attendance was down to 69. An excellent meal and a well organised raffle by Messrs O. Jones and B. Charman helped to make it a financial as well as a social success.
Support for the Christmas morning run and social seems to be on the wane although 14 members and friends did attend.
The Attendance Award has been won this year by Runs Secretary Russ Mantle with Messrs Inder and Keller equal second and General Secretary A. Robinson fourth. Committee meetings have been very well attended with five of the eight officers and committee being present at all eight meetings. New tea venues at Holt Pound and Tongham have been used with much success. Voluntary contributions amounted to £1-16-1 and enabled us to off-set over-bookings on two occasions.
Two slide shows were held and both were well attended and successful.
A new Photographic competition was inaugurated, the result of which will be known at a slide show at Horsell on 7th November. Two weddings took place during the year, Alan Lonslow to Janice Capell and Peter Emberson to Shirley Patten and our best wishes are extended to them all.
To mark the C.T.C.'s 92nd birthday, a series of rides began from the Club's Godalming headquarters in August and several West Surrey members gave their support. Our President was also able to help with the planning and organisation. We extend a vote of thanks to Mr. Inder for his valuable weekly reports of our activities in the local papers and also to Mr. Wilf. Warren for the help given with the production of the bi-monthly runs lists.
