WEST SURREY D.A. NEWS LETTER No. 23.
"SUPER GRANDPA" - must be the way to describe a proud grandfather who rode the West Surrey SUPER GRIMPEUR well within the 5hr schedule and then took off to ride to Worthing! Many lesser mortals climbed into their cars and drove home but not GORDON APPLEBY. The event was a great success for organiser RAY CRAIG with 57 starters and 44 finishers, amongst whom were West Surrey members Ray Craig, Simon Doughty, Gordon Appleby, Tim Staton, Harold Coleman, Graham Richardson, Alan Wey and Eric Parr inside 5hrs; Dave Wey inside 7hrs and Clive Paxman completing 4 laps(full course 6 laps) inside 3½hrs as a junior. THURSDAY NIGHTER Paddy Shea made a brave attempt at this testing event(62½ml & 7,800ft of climbing) completing five laps but with insufficient time to complete the last.
The D.A. 100 MILE RELIABILITY RIDE on July 7th was very well supported with 26 entries including riders from Haselmere C.C. and the Weybridge Wheelers. Seven finished within 7hrs, five in 8hrs and 9 in 9hrs. Three LOVELY LADIES rode and qualified for certificates.
Current positions in the Benstead Cup Competition are 1st Russ Mantle 222pts, 2nd Harold Coleman 22Opts, 3rd K. Williams 213, C. Seymour 185.
The last of the events counting towards the Benstead Cup are the HILLCLIMB and the FREEWHEELING on October 11th. After that it is attendance points which will decide the final placings - you have until the last ride in September to gain a few more. Present positions in the ATTENDANCE COMPETITION are:- Inder 124pt, Mantle 109, Parfitt 108. JUNIOR ATTENDANCE:- S. Pack 82, Barnes 69, Paxman 54.
West Surrey's latest AUDAX EVENT was the 400km ride over 8/9th August, based on Aldershot and Salisbury. Organised again by Ray Craig it attracted 21 riders of whom 17 finished. Three West Surrey riders started but only two finished - poor GORDON APPLEBY fell when pulling up on a greasy surface. He was put back on his bike and attempted to ride painfully on but had to give up a short way down the road and was taken to hospital where a serious break was discovered and Gordon finished with part of his hip joint replaced. Gordon is home now and mending well but would be pleased to hear from any of his friends - he was delighted that so many visited him at Guildford Hospital.
