West Surrey CTC Newsletter - September/October 1985

Firstly for all of you who picked up Cycle Touring and said "what no West Surrey News", so did I.  Our copy was submitted two weeks in advance of the normal deadline.

A great big Thank you to all who helped marshal, run, feed etc. on the Tour of the Hills.  The weather was truly awful, the coldest wettest August day for over 40 years.  Well done all helpers, all riders said that the marshalling etc. was superb and much appreciated on such an awful day.  Thank you also to Simon for his organisation and also F.W. Evans (Waterloo & Kingston) for the vouchers for all the finishers.
Well done to all the riders who finished, for the record we had:

Entries - 98;   Finishers - 34;   Finishers in fastest time - 3.
Two pairs of track mitts were found at the finish, any claimants ?

DA Medals.  By my reckoning there are probably at least three DA members who qualify for the new 'Gold Medal' award.  Several more will get silver and bronze.  Contact Dave Butler to submit your claim or for guidance on the rules (GFD. 810356).

Congratulations to Dave Butler who has now managed to get well under the hour for 25 miles riding in Charlotteville colours.  Dave also proved that funny bikes aren't necessary to go really fast; probably only necessary if you want to look funny!

On a humorous note one of the funny sights at the Tour of the Hills finish was Adrienne Crawshaw insisting that Gary Smith take his £1 Off Evans Cycle Shop Voucher (Gary owns Evans Cycles).  If you helped marshall the event and haven't yet got your voucher contact Simon Doughty on Byfleet 41458.

Intermediate Section.  This group will have a runs co-ordinator in the shape of David Pinkess.  Volunteers are needed to lead rides and they should contact David or Geraldine at club nights or on rides.

DA CHARITY RIDE. Sunday 22nd September in aid of White Lodge Childrens Spastic Centre.  Assemble White Lodge, Holloway Hill, Chertsey 0945 hrs.  Tea later at White Lodge (5Op).  Ride 25 or 50 miles and get your friends, neighbours, and colleagues to sponsor you.  Sponsor forms and route details from:
Gillian Smith, 6, Brooklyn Court, Woking (Woking 61294).
Gillian also asks that riders are needed/welcomed who don't want to be sponsored but will come along and keep an eye on those riders not used to cycling as far as 25 or 50 miles.

HILL CLIMB & FREEWHEELING. October 6th - remaining events in the Benstead Cup competition - see Runs List for details.

TOURIST TRIAL. October 13th - not included in the Benstead Cup competition this year; it will be an easy 'fun' event.  Entries from pairs of riders will be taken at the start.  Minimum distance approx. 30 miles from CTC HQ to Rowledge, with options for longer rides.

PHOTOGRAPHIC COMPETITION.  October 19th.  NOTE last date for entering photographs/slides for this competition is October 6th.  Contact any committee member.

DA DINNER & DANCE. The date is November 23rd - good music this year plus your chance to collect DA medals if you're a winner.

Helen Juden reports that the non-event of the year was the Treasure Hunt from the Clubroom on Saturday August 17th. Thanks to Kath Parfitt for opening the bar and to Mike & Jenny Harlow who did turn up.  Where were you ?

Wednesday evening rides have now stopped for this year.

CLUB NIGHTS.  The Guildford Rowing Club will open its doors on:
25th Sept. - Slides ( Lands End - John o' Groats) 23rd Oct. - Open Forum
20th Nov. - Maintenance 18th Dec. - Xmas Social
A special Thank You to Mr & Mrs Mike Harlow for the use of their swimming pool and a superb tea afterwards.  The sun shone too !
